As a pretty active person, two things have happened. One, I’ve had WAY less time set aside for training because I’ve been busy with my primary sport, and weight lifting… And Two, I am SO MUCH MORE OUT OF SHAPE THAN I REALIZED. I went on a training ride (anticipated 60+ miles) with my riding partners… had a bike issue that resulted in my cutting the ride short and taking the train back from Gloucester to Boston. Fine. Better two weeks out than on ride day! But that means my 60+ mile ride turned into 35/40ish when all was said and done (or about 33 if I don’t count the ride to the train, ride from the train, two test rides around the shop in Cambridge, and then the ride back to my car) But here’s the NOT fine part… those ‘rolling hills’ of Gloucester left me BEAT!
So, now fully panicked, I got up bright the next AM and early and did another 35ish miles through the ‘rolling hills’ of Bolton, Clinton, Berlin, Stow, Acton, etc. Now, one day after THAT… My legs are fatigued! So now I’m making all sorts of scrambled adjustments to try to crank up my muscle endurance WAY TOO LATE, in prep of this monster ride. So in just two weeks, I’ll be headed out on a wing and a prayer… hoping that I haven’t TOTALLY screwed myself, and that the energy of the day (and the guilt of being a fundraising failure!) will carry me through.
So, the adjustments I’m making now are:
-
Early to bed
Biking to and from work daily but taking the route with the most hills and pushing for time
three more 30+mile rides between now and the wednesday before the ride
No lifting until the ride is done – focus on HIIT and endurance… maybe too little too late, but every bit will help.
RESTING thursday and friday. Nothing but walking and stretching.
This is so classic me I can’t even stand it. I’m the master procrastinator. Sigh. Wish me luck.
